Vista hops, officially released in 2021

Vista hops are a modern American aroma variety, known for their distinctive aroma and flavor profile. They were officially released in late 2021 as part of the USDA’s public breeding program. Vista hops are characterized by their large cones and have demonstrated high yields and a strong tolerance for drought and heat.

In terms of flavor and aroma, Vista hops are noted for their tropical fruit, tangerine, melon, pear, and green tea notes. They are versatile and potent, making them ideal for a variety of beer styles. Specifically, Vista hops are highly recommended for fruit-forward IPAs, Pale Ales, lagers, pilsners, and DDH (Double Dry Hopped) hazy, juicy IPAs. The hop is also well-suited for lighter beer styles, including lagers and other lighter beers, as it brings forward delicate orange, tangerine, pear, and apricot aromas with sub-layers of herbal green tea and grassy notes.

Brewers who have used Vista hops describe them as having stone fruit, citrus, tropical fruit, and floral characteristics. These hops can be used throughout the brewing process and are considered dual-purpose, serving both for bittering and aroma.

Vista hops are the result of a 2006 open pollinated cross by Dr. John Henning, involving a tetraploid Perle female and an unknown diploid male, leading to this unique hop variety
